Replacing a toilet can seem like an easy swap, and it can add a refreshing new look to any bathroom. We’ve all seen home improvement shows on the DIY channel where ordinary individuals will make small changes, and it drastically changes the overall appearance of the home. Before you begin the process of ripping your old toilet out to put in a brand new one, there are probably a few questions you may be asking yourself. What are the basic steps you should know about how to replace a toilet and is a DIY replacement a good choice for the project? A bathroom swap is a natural process, and this is primarily due to toilet plumbing already being in place. However, if you want to change its location, it is not typically a DIY project and would require a professional plumber. If you just want to update your modern toilet then read on.
You can go to some different home improvement stores to get a replacement toilet and they have all the same basic setups, which makes it very easy when you go to select one. Once you have purchased the replacement toilet, you are ready to begin the installation. Here is a basic how-to on replacing your old commode:
- Shut off the water, first and foremost.
- Remove the tank lid, and then delete the refill tube from the overflow tank so that you can drain the water from the reservoir. Flush until it is empty.
- Use a rag to collect any remaining water in the tank so that it is scorched.
- Disconnect the water supply line and unhook the flapper chain inside the bowl.
- Unscrew the bolts connecting the tank to the bowl, then remove the tank. If the bolts look rusty, it would be a perfect time to replace them.
- Then you will need to unscrew the nuts at the base of the toilet using an adjustable wrench.
- Rock the toilet back and forth to release it from the floor, then remove the wax ring, and clean the floor, so it is free of debris
- Next, you will be applying a new wax ring to the drain seal, and you will only have one chance at positioning it. So if you miss, you will need to use a new one.
- Place the toilet in the same situation it was before, rocking it back and forth till it has level placement.
- Reverse the steps to reassemble.
